A shipping magnate in Naples promises the hand of his daughter, Maria, in marriage to the son of a family of equal social prominence, Renato, but Maria is in love with a simple fisherman, Giacomo. The magnate manages to create a rift between the two lovers. Maria agrees to marry Renato, but he proves to be a criminal. The girl after a few years meets again and marries Giacomo who in the meantime has become a famous singer.
